Annual awards ceremony

Each year the the AIDS Action Council recognises the invaluable contribution of our members, volunteers and supports to our work. The following awards were awarded on the night:
David Widdup Award
Sally Ramsay
In acknowledgement of her outstanding contribution to supporting people living with HIV/AIDS and the AIDS Action Council of the ACT. Sally has been a volunteer with us for years. Her fantastic cooking skills are appreciated by everyone in the Peer Support Network, but even more appreciated is her ability to listen and put anyone at ease.
Communication and Media Award
Simon Corbell MLA
This year the communication award recognises Simon Corbell for his staunch support and perseverance in advocating for updated legislation dealing with the lives of GLBTI people in the Australian Capital Territory.
Community Award
Campaign for Civil Unions
This year’s award goes to Campaign for Civil Unions in acknowledgement of their outstanding contribution in supporting and advocating for the lives of GLBTI people in the Australian Capital Territory.
President's Award
Bears Canberra
Bears Canberra have long supported the work of AIDS Action Council. They are not only one of the most generous benefactors of the Council, but are also valuable promoters of our health promotion messages, and contribute to Canberra’s vibrant community.
Fabulous Memberships
Michael Beck
For an outstanding, and long term contribution to supporting people living with HIV/AIDS. Michael is one of very longest standing volunteers with an involvement in almost all of the areas of the council. He is always ready to sit down and have a chat and share his lived experience to help others. Michael has been recognised in many forums for his on going volunteer efforts and has been nominated as ACT volunteer of the year.
John Guppy
John Guppy has had a long commitment to the AIDS Action Council. He is well known in the community as a past President of the council and through his involvement in many of Canberra’s GLBT community groups. John has also long been a volunteer of the Council, and in particular has facilitated countless peer support workshops over many years.
Claire Drake
Claire Drake has a long involvement in the HIV/AIDS sector, with a focus on peer education and working with same-sex attracted youth. Claire has served on the board of the AIDS Action Council, most recently as President in 2007/08.
