World AIDS Day 2006

1 December is recognised internationally as World AIDS Day. In Canberra, the AIDS Action Council is co-ordinating a number of events of the day to raise awareness in the community of the continuing impact of HIV and AIDS.

Events

Chief Minister's Breakfast

Chief Minister's BreakfastThis annual event recognises the local, national and international impacts of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Deputy Chief Minister Katy Gallagher will give the keynote address.

Time: 7.30 am, Friday 1 December

Venue: Hotel Kurrajong, National Circuit Barton.

Cost: $25 per person. Full breakfast included.

Awareness-raising stalls

AIDS Action Council stallAwareness and education stalls will be at the following places during the day:

Ecumenical Service

The annual Ecumenical Service is held to remember all those people who have been affected by HIV/AIDS and to reaffirm our committment to support, treatment and prevention. Service co-ordinated by All Saints Ainslie.

Time: 5.30pm, Friday 1 December

Venue: The Carillon, Aspen Island, Wendouree Drive.

Twilight Picnic

Carillon in redBring your own picnic and drinks and something to sit on. The Canberra Gay and Lesbian Qwire will be performing during the evening.

Time: 6pm to 8pm

Venue: The Carillon, Aspen Island, Wendouree Drive.

Film screening

The YWCA of Canberra and SHFPACT are screening Women Are Leading Change, a documentary produced by the World YWCA in partnership with UNAIDS and Mondofragilis highlighting women’s challenges and efforts in the struggle against HIV and AIDS.

Time: 12:30pm-1:30pm Monday 4 December

Venue: SHFPACT Training Room Level 1, 28 University Ave, Civic.

Red ribbons

Red RibbonWe encourage everyone to wear a red ribbon to show their awareness of HIV/AIDS and their support of people living with HIV/AIDS. Red ribbons are available from the AIDS Action Council, and supporting businesses for a suggested donation of $2 each.
