World AIDS Day 2008

World AIDS Awareness Week, culminating in World AIDS Day on the 1 December, is commemorated worldwide to raise awareness of the continuing impact of HIV/AIDS. In Canberra, the AIDS Action Council is co-ordinating a number of events during the week to raise awareness in the community of the continuing impact of HIV and AIDS.

World AIDS Awareness Week Launch

ACT Legislative AssemblyKeynote speakers will discuss contemporary issues around HIV/AIDS and a large artwork will be installed outside of The Assembly.

Time: 10.30 am, Monday 24 November. Morning tea served.

Hush LoungeCocktail Party A Night of Hope; Enjoy Life; Take Control

Doves and Ribbons

Doves and Ribbons Day 2008The businesses of Manuka are generously hosting a special street fair. The lane will be closed off to traffic and opened up to live music, street performance, food, drink and more!

Time: 12 noon - 5 pm Sunday 30 November

Interfaith Service

Carillon in redThis service features representatives from a number of religious faiths and offers a quiet reflection to remember those who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS.

Organised by All Saints Anglican Church, Ainslie and with a performance by the Canberra Gay and Lesbian Qwire.

Time: 6.00pm, Monday 1 December

Venue: The Carillon, Aspen Island, Wendouree Drive.

Awareness-raising stalls

AIDS Action Council stallAs well as raising money for the Papua New Guinea HIV/AIDS organisation, Igat Hope, the stalls aim to raise awareness in the community of the global and local impact of HIV/AIDS.

Ribbons and other awareness products will be available.

Red ribbons

Red RibbonWe encourage everyone to wear a red ribbon to show their awareness of HIV/AIDS and their support of people living with HIV/AIDS. Red ribbons are available from the AIDS Action Council, and supporting businesses for a suggested donation of $2 each.

If you have or know of a business that is willing to display a Red Ribbon Box or want to arrange a Red Ribbon morning or afternoon tea at your workplace during AIDS Awareness Week please contact Megan Munro on megan.munro@aidsaction.org.au or 6257 2855.
