Are you worried about your drug and alcohol use?
What is SMART Recovery?
SMART stands for Self Management and Recovery Training. It is a voluntary, peer managed self-help group that assists you to recover from alcohol and drug use.
SMART Recovery supports you with practical skills to help you deal with problems and to enable you to abstain and achieve a healthy lifestyle balance.
The SMART Recovery program offers a free face-to-face self-help group to help you recover from drug or alcohol addiction.
The program is for individuals who would like to abstain from their addiction. SMART is an alternative to Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.
The program is grounded in well-researched approaches to changing addictive behaviours. It is supportive but more than a mutual-support program. As a self-help program, it empowers people to beat their addictions.
It dispels many myths about addiction that can hold people back, undermine their confidence, or delay recovery.
Times and venue
The Canberra GLBTI SMART Recovery group meets weekly 6.15pm -7.30pm Mondays (starting from 14 April 2008)
The group meets at Westlund House, 16 Gordon Street Acton. It is a 10 minute walk from the Civic bus interchange, and there is ample free parking in the evening.
Does it cost anything to join?
It is absolutely free to attend the group.
If after attending the group you feel that the SMART Recovery program is for you, you are encouraged to purchase a handbook for a small fee. The handbook will help you to work through the program and is a useful resource of tools and techniques.
Why have a group for the GLBTI community?
We want the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) community to have a safe space to deal with drug and alcohol addiction.
Dealing with a drug or alcohol addiction within the GLBTI community can present unique difficulties. We recognise that the GLBTI community has a higher level of drug and alcohol use than the broader community.
SMART Recovery is a secular-based program and not affiliated with any religious group.
The 4-point program
The program helps individuals gain independence from addictive behaviours. Our efforts are based on scientific knowledge and evolve as scientific knowledge evolves. The program offers specific tools and techniques for each of the program points:
- Enhancing and maintaining motivation
- Coping with cravings
- Problem solving
- Lifestyle balance
