Dams can help prevent sexually transmitted infections

Using a dam during oral sex activities, such as rimming and cunnilingus, can reduce the risk of picking up a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and HIV

Transmission of HIV through oral sex is a lower risk than through anal sex, however some people don’t realise that unprotected oral sex can result in transmission of sexually transmitted infections including genital herpes, chlamydia, syphilis and gonorrhoea, as well as hepatitis.

Known as "the other barrier for safe sex", a dam is a thin square piece of latex which is placed over the anal or vaginal areas during oral sex. If you are sucking someone's penis it is recommended that you use a condom instead.

Using a dam is especially important if you've got a cut or sore in your mouth or lips or if you have bleeding gums.

Similar rules apply to using a dam as for using a condom:

And like condoms, dams are available in a variety of colours and flavours.

Dams are available from the AIDS Action Council.
