Step 2: Test

Once you've established effective communication and some relationship guidelines, it's important to know you HIV status. You should get a HIV test.

While you're at the doctors or clinic you could make an appointment for your next test. You can also sign up for a testing reminder online.

You will need to come back to get your results. Most clinics will see you separately, so you'll need to tell each other your own results.

Depending on your circumstances it may be necessary to make an appointment for a second HIV test. This is usually because the first test was carried out during the the ‘window’ period. A ‘negative’ result from the first test may be unreliable if you are still in the ‘window’ period. Your clinician will be able to advise if and when a second test is needed.

If the appropriate tests indicate that you're both negative, and you still want to stop using condoms, you're ready for Step 3: Trust...
