Her appointment comes at a time when an increase in HIV notifications sweeps Australia.
"The AIDS Action Council is recognised across this country as having an effective, factually based approach to the health and well being of people living with HIV/AIDS - and ways of stopping others joining their number," said Ms Davey.
"This will be in all our minds at the annual Candelight Vigil next Sunday because in Canberra we are well placed to influence the national response, which is desperately lacking."
"The Commonwealth Government has sat on its own review of the 4th National HIV/AIDS Strategy for 18 months. This strategy runs out next month just when Australia is facing an unprecedented jump in new infections."
Rebecca Davey brings to the Council a long understanding of both the personal and social impact of living with a chronic illness. A registered nurse, she was formerly the health promotion officer at the ACT Hepatitis C Council and, earlier, the manager of contracts for health agencies under the ACT Government - including the AIDS Action Council.
Joey Tabone, President of the AIDS Action Council welcomes Ms Davey's appointment to the position.
"Rebecca brings to the agency a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to the national partnership approach in HIV treatment and prevention which has served this country so well," said Joey Tabone. "The ACT must work to preserve these partnerships and not let the Federal Government get away with completely eroding Australia's world reputation for fighting HIV/AIDS."
The AIDS Action Council of the ACT provides care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS; safe sex education through schools, community campaigns and sex workers; and runs a wide range of volunteer and counselling services.
Media are invited to attend the Council's annual Candlelight Vigil of remembrance at 7.00pm on Sunday May 16 in the Hall of the National Museum of Australia.
