23rd Annual International AIDS Candlelight Memorial the largest AIDS commemoration event

On 21 May 2006, the international AIDS Candlelight Memorial was held in more than 3000 communities and 106 countries, making it the largest AIDS commemoration event ever.

The annual event, coordinated world wide by The Global Health Council, and locally by the AIDS Action Council of the ACT, commemorates the lives lost to AIDS, demonstrates support for people living with HIV/AIDS and mobilises community responses to the infection.

Canberra’s annual AIDS Candlelight Memorial saw over 120 people attend the Candlelight memorial with Dignitaries including the High Commissioner from Uganda, High Commissioner from Israel, High Commissioner from Kenya and other representatives from Papua New Guinea, Serbia and Montenegro, Cambodia, South Africa, Fiji, Mauritius and Croatia, as well as several members of the ACT Legislative Assembly.

It began at 5.30pm at All Saints Church in Ainslie with an ecumenical service, followed at 7pm in the Studio of the National Museum of Australia. Guest speakers included Simon Corbell MLA, Brendan Smyth MLA and His Excellency Dr James Lukabyo from the High Commission for the Republic of Uganda. 

Panels of the Australian AIDS Memorial Quilt were unfolded in the Museum’s Hall flanked by National flags from of number of Embassy’s who were in attendance,  candles were placed on the deck to represent those lost to AIDS-related illnesses.

Canberra has been participating in the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial for 19 years.
