Canberra urged to take control of HIV/AIDS

Greens Health Spokesperson, Amanda Bresnan, will launch World AIDS Awareness week in Canberra at 11.00 am Monday 24 November at the Legislative Assembly, followed by the unveiling of a temporary public art installation in Civic Square.

World AIDS Awareness Week, which concludes with World AIDS Day on 1 December, is the largest global HIV/AIDS event and is sponsored by the United Nations the World AIDS Campaign. This year marks the 20th Anniversary of World AIDS Day.

This year, the Canberra community is being asked to reflect on the epidemic in the wider pacific region. Andrew Burry, General Manager of the AIDS Action Council, says that it is important to have a global focus on World AIDS Day.

“Just on our doorstep, there is an emerging health crisis in Papua New Guinea,” he said. “Australia has a real responsibility to help our nearest neighbours confront this epidemic.”

Currently, only 48% of people living with HIV/AIDS in Papua New Guinea have access to HIV anti-retroviral treatment, and up to 70% of beds in Port Moresby General Hospital are occupied by people with HIV related illness.(1)

Following the launch, the public will be invited to view the public art installation created by a team of volunteers in Civic Square. Artist Megan Munro says that she hopes the artwork will send a strong message about the extent of the epidemic.

“It is difficult to put a human face to the staggering statistics we receive,” she said. “But each figure is a loved family member and friend of someone. This is what I hope to remind the community.”

Canberrans can help by purchasing a Red Ribbon during World AIDS Awareness Week. Money raised is going to Igat Hope, an organisation for people living with HIV/AIDS in Papua New Guinea.
