MATE program

MATE: preventing violence in our community

AIDS Action Council is running a new workshop for violence prevention. The workshop empowers bystanders to actively prevent and interrupt violence seen in LGBTIQ communities.

Developed by Dr Shannon Spriggs Murdoch out of Griffith University, MATE is based on the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program that was developed in the USA in 1993.

MVP began as a program enlisting student athletes to be leaders in the fight to end men’s violence against women. Today MVP has been delivered to schools and university, the military, professional athletes, social service providers, and businesses in six countries.

The goal of MATE is to raise participants’ awareness of underlying issues and dynamics surrounding all forms of violence and challenge participants to empathise about these issues. Participants will examine and discuss realistic scenarios that might include violence and learn from their peers about how to take action. Participants will develop concrete options for intervening in potentially dangerous situations and be inspired to be proactive, confident leaders in the fight against violence.

MATE has been funded by the Women’s Safety Grant from the ACT Government.

Three sessions of MATE are taking place over the coming months:

  • For Female Identifying Community Members: 20 August, 10am
  • For Male Identifying Community Members: 3 September, 10am
  • For Sex and Gender Diverse People: 24 September, 10am
